Have at any time a followup book sold more then the first(total, I expect they sell more right away)? Aka, I assume noone would buy soulsmith without having read Unsouled, so there should be more sales of unsouled, but is that always true? Is there a falling stair of sails with Unsouled at the top?

    Will Wight

There's always a falling stair of sales, so to speak. The first one always sells more total, but subsequent books always sell faster.

    Questioner

Why aren't your books available for pre order?

    Will Wight

With Kindle Direct Publishing, I could put the book up for pre-order anytime up to three days prior to the release date (which was yesterday). Had I done that, which all the publishers do, not only would you have been able to pre-order, but the book would come out at exactly midnight in every region that allows this system.

I don’t do it that way for two reasons. First, in the past, pre-orders have killed the Day 1 ratings spike I need to generate interest in the book. When I tried this before, I lost money by having pre-orders.

Now, Amazon may have changed how this works by now. They’re tweaking stuff all the time. But that’s why I only tried pre-orders once and haven’t since.

Second, I make changes to the book all the way up until the moment I release it. I rewrote a scene two hours ago and made some formatting changes just now. I’ll be tweaking that up until the release.

Instead of stopping that process two weeks ago and having the book uploaded, ready to release at exactly midnight on June 1st, I chose to keep working on it and upload it the night of May 31st.

Does that mean that the exact release time depends on how long Amazon takes to build a landing page for the book? Yes. But last time it took them about 45 minutes after upload for Amazon.com, so it’s not likely to be too bad.

The main “risk” here is in other domains, like Amazon.co.uk, where the landing page takes longer to create.

Have you read all 80 threads about when the book is coming out?

    Will Wight

I think so. I try to read everything, except for Discord channels other than this one.

Footnote: This is referring to Ghostwater.

Terry Goodkind says that reading other people's books is bad because it influences your writing. Would you say you have been negatively influenced by the writings of your students while you were teaching intro to creative writing? Or any other work for that matter?

    Will Wight

I would...strongly disagree.   I would strongly disagree with many of the other things Terry Goodkind has said as well.

Do our constant questions annoy you?

    Will Wight

Not these, no. But I get some questions multiple times a day for which I've already provided an answer, and those irritate me. Like all the people who ask if there will be another book in the Cradle series or if I'm done writing them.

This would be a longer one, but any chance we could (someday) get a primer on how and why "internal" vital aura aspects operate differently than others? Such as blood and dream aura, which non-blood/dream madra shouldn't be able to affect, but the spirit somehow defends against Ruler techniques of them since Blood artists can't go around giving Lords heart attacks willy nilly.

    Questioner

How does childhood development work in cradle? Especially in regards to higher tier families that can raise a baby to jade or gold in one pill. Taken to an extreme with luminous queen sha mirara, she inherited her power and is currently queen. Who controlled the super-charged baby when she was having fits? Also she only looks to be 10 or 11, if she is a monarch presumably she ages incredibly slowly, would she have the maturity of her true age? And what happens when she hits puberty? will she be affected by her hormones?

    Will Wight

She doesn't age any more slowly than anyone else until after she reaches maturity. Advancement doesn't lock you into your current age so much as it optimizes your body; she won't be sick a day in her life or suffer the debilitating effects of age.

As for the families that can raise their kids to Gold instantly, these families also have the power to easily control an immature Gold. If everyone in the family is an Underlord, a five-year-old Lowgold throwing a temper tantrum has the same relative power as a normal five-year-old throwing a temper tantrum.

Danger only comes in two circumstances: when the child is more powerful than the family can contain, or when the child develops the power to hurt itself before the ability to resist/control itself.

Those are the situations they're trying to prevent. Usually, a child with the power to rocket-propel itself into a brick wall can also survive being rocket-propelled into a brick wall.

Hi Will. I wasn't able to comment on your blogpost, but tell all those folks at Hidden Gnome that they're my heroes

    Will Wight

Will do, Tievel! Thanks!     They're the ones who flog me into productivity.

    Tievel

That's what makes them my heroes. And apparently it helps your productivity to boot, so even better

    Questioner

It has been discussed and mentioned in the book and in discord But I wanted to clarify the steps for Underlord that have been mentioned. (i understand the spoilers etc. so if you can't give anything away :ok_hand: ) Step 1 is opening a soul space above the core to place things. step 2 was mentioned being able to weave soulfire but is that just the first part of step 2 or is that all step 2 is?

    Will Wight

Soulfire: that's all step two is, but it's more complicated than it sounds. Step 3 is forging your body in soulfire.

And guys really, a blog post on the 1st of April? Will's posts are already insanity on a regular basis, imagine the kind of shit he would have to pull off on the 1st of April

    Will Wight

I have done April Fools Day posts in the past, and I enjoy them, but I don't do them every year. Doing it well takes some thought and time, plus someone always takes it seriously. I did an April Fools short story called "House of Cool Swords" that was a parody of House of Blades, and some people still emailed me breaking down why they didn't like my new style.
